Adolescent Substance Abuse
“To understand adolescent substance abuse we need to understand first of all the cultural context in which it occurs. This, in a sense, is the first risk factor, and applies to most youth, for America has become a drug oriented society: in other words, our ethics with respect to the use of mood-altering chemicals are basically permissive and sympathetic.” (Joseph Nowinski)

I agree with the fact that we are drugging children to convience parents, but because can not specify there needs is it not up to the proffessionals to make the decisions. By stating this, I feel are proffessionals are to generous with there prescription pads.
ReplyDeleteGood thoughts. The answers in the North are not easy to find. My feeling is that it must start at home. If the homes become effective they will have a larger voice in the schools and how the kids are educated.
ReplyDeleteHere in the rural south we have an issue with not enough psychologists so we have adult psychologists working with and diagnosing what our youth need. Now that being said I trust they are very intelligent individuals and I am not saying that they are doing it all wrong. What I am saying is they are used to using drugs that work for adults and we sometimes question what some of our youth are on for example to come off of addictions they are given mood stabalizers and anti-depressants together. What is this doing not only for their addiction issues but also some of the youth I work with are already suicidal and the anti depressants they are given can induce and have induced suicidal ideations for these individuals. I guess my frustration is what is it that we can do to help our youth through these issues without giving more drugs, that they may have the chance of becoming addicted to!
